Sexual & Gender-Based Violence Training for Healthcare Professionals

Overview

Every healthcare professional will encounter a survivor. It may not be labeled as such — it may present as unexplained injuries, a client who flinches at touch, a disclosure made quietly at the end of a consultation, or a story that doesn’t quite add up. These moments are not rare. They are happening daily, in emergency rooms, clinics, and community health centers across Lebanon — and most healthcare professionals have never been trained to recognize them.

This program addresses that gap directly. In a country where SGBV remains deeply underreported and survivors have few safe places to turn, the healthcare professional who knows how to respond can change the outcome entirely. With nearly 1 in 3 women globally having experienced intimate partner or sexual violence, the clinical encounter is often the only opportunity for a survivor to be seen, believed, and supported.

This training equips healthcare professionals — including nurses, physicians, medical residents, students, and allied health providers — with the clinical knowledge, practical skills, and ethical framework to recognize signs of SGBV, handle disclosures with care, and connect survivors to the pathways they need — not with hesitation, but with confidence, compassion, and safety. Grounded in WHO guidelines and the LIVES approach, and integrating trauma-informed and survivor-centered principles, the program reflects current international standards in SGBV clinical response.
